Originally constructed in 1877 as a public school house, ‘Old Bromfield’ was preserved and re-purposed to the Harvard Public Library in 2007. Throughout the renovation key interior and exterior architectural components were restored to complement the style of architecture. A new 8,000 SF addition was constructed to pay homage to the original design and in turn created a full service library with indoor and outdoor spaces for patrons.
As the site planning and landscape consultant, Brown Sardina provided design development through construction administration services. Improvements focused on harmonizing the site and building to create a timeless public facility. Sweeping walks and roadways navigate the topography to provide the required parking and accessible routes throughout the site. Native vegetation accentuate the pastoral landscape and a restored front allee reinforces the original arrival sequence. Brick, granite and bluestone materials strengthen the relationship between building and site.
