Brown Sardina’s involvement with Deerfield Academy has spanned nearly three decades starting with a campus master plan. The Koch Center is the most recent classroom building of that master plan and completes a critical corner of the campus academic quad. It serves as an important link to modern academic architecture, the archaeological heritage of the region, and establishing a sustainable benchmark for their future.
The Koch Center roots itself into the landscape while creating a strong architectural edge and identity to the adjacent open spaces and athletic fields. A system of serpentine brick retaining walls, hedges, arced tree planting, and gradual grade change blend directly into the distinctive forms of the building. Native plants and regional rock outcroppings were selected to compliment the science department’s core curriculum. Landscaped terraces and a sedum green roof create comfortable outdoor spaces while addressing sustainability.
