Adelphi University’s master plan influenced nearly 50% of campus area, structures, and recreation spaces. Throughout the project process, Brown Sardina developed the master plan, secured site plan approvals and provided Landscape Architectural services for the Center for Sport and Performing Arts. The final vision encouraged the integration of the arts, athletics, and recreation into a new student oriented campus core. It emphasized the removal of contiguous parking and shifted towards a network of interconnected walkways, large open spaces, and new turf fields and tennis courts. Sculpted landscape forms define walkway and plaza edges while screening parking areas. The landscape character within the parking areas is inspired by the repetitive nature of a ‘planted grove’. Continuous shade aided in the successful mitigation of urban heat island effect. Additionally, each planted island collects and cleans storm water before discharging into the groundwater. These and other sustainable strategies supported the project’s LEED Silver certification.
