Anna Jaques Hospital is a community hospital affiliated with the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. The expansion and relocation of existing hospital departments cultivated an opportunity for a new hospital arrival and circulation strategy as well as three unique plaza spaces (lower plaza, upper terrace, and a reflection roof deck).
Anchored by the main lawn, each space takes on a distinctive character that accommodates its specific users and departments. Their spatial relationships are designed to frame unique views to the surrounding context as well as to existing garden spaces. Natural stone walls terrace the landscape while incorporating a central fountain and meditation area between the upper and lower entrances. Multi-stem birch trees, groundcovers, and appealing perennial and annual flowers emphasize a calm and reflective space. Informal berms were planted with evergreen and deciduous trees and wildflowers were integrated to screen the hospital expansion from the adjacent neighborhood.
