Completed in 2002, the new two-story facility replaced the existing aging Greenwich Academy upper school. Due to the complicated terrain the architecture embraced a network of accessible greenroofs, patios, and courtyards to blend the surrounding landscape and adjacent buildings. Successful unification was dependent on carefully designed spaces which complement the contemporary architecture and adjacent classroom uses, frame unique views, and reinforce circulation patterns.
Welcoming all users and acting as the central green is the main greenroof. Its vibrant and fluid landscape forms strengthen the arrival sequence and embrace the extruded crystalline structures of the school below. Arranged stone walls define circulation patterns and provide platforms for artwork of local artists and students. Descending into the site are additional spaces which highlight the adjacent uses, including a balcony overlooking the sports complex and a private river birch lined library courtyard.
