Founded in 1901, Mount Pleasant Home is a nonprofit affordable elder residence facility located on the Jamaicaway section of Fredrick Law Olmsted’s ‘Emerald Necklace’. The existing structure had not been updated since 1926, but due to increasing occupancy it was slated for expansion.
Using a sustainable approach to design, all programmed site elements are integrated into the natural systems of the surrounding context. The building orientation takes advantage of the southern exposure and creates an opportunity for a sun filled resident courtyard. Water is celebrated through an on-site ‘Rain Garden’ which provides the residents with an attractive buffer to the adjacent street. The natural character of Jamaicaway was preserved and enhanced using a native planting palette as well as low bush blueberry, cranberry, and witch hazel to provide wildlife habitat opportunities. Accessible paths meander through the site and create a variety of meaningful experiences for residents and visitors.
