The Prudential Center, a 23 acre urban mixed-use development, has been updating its character since the grand opening in 1964. Subsequent years have resulted in semi-open spaces to be enclosed and become a vibrant interior retail center but turned its back on the central interior plaza. A new office tower, hotel and condominiums have welcomed new interest to connect the Prudential Center to Boylston Street and the surrounding neighborhoods. Brown Sardina developed a modern image for the 1964 structural deck convey a neighborhood street feel for residents and visitors of the Prudential Center, ‘Avalon Promenade’. The reenvisioned promenade features sculptural art installations, energy efficient catenary and pole mounted lighting, screening of the exterior Prudential Shops walls, new living green walls and planting with year-round interest, flexible seating opportunities, an updated material palette, new outdoor retail opportunities, and two new stair connections to the street below.
