Located in a coastal New England town, the design for Southcoast Center for Cancer Care preserves the pastoral and agrarian history of the farming site. The concept utilizes existing stone walls to frame the meandering entry drive and offers views to the surrounding meadows and wooded wetlands. Stone walls and loose boulders continue to extend through the site to define garden spaces and accessible paths. Placed boulders and a native plant palette of extend the architecture into the entrance rain garden and create a unique buffer between the entrance and parking.
Protected by the frequent stone walls, the patient terrace and meditation garden overlook a lush natural and planned landscape. Together they form a relationship which encourages contemplation and reflection for all users. Adjacent sloping lawns define uninhibited views of the picturesque surrounding wetlands and provide a sense of enclosure, safety, and privacy.
