Formerly occupied by a road and driveways, the New Science Quadrangle and Plaza at Stonehill College creates an iconic setting for both existing buildings and a New Science Center for the college to hold convocation, concerts and other ceremonies. The Science Center serves as the backdrop, as the plaza unfolds in between the Martin Institute and O’Hara Hall, offering a dynamic permeable paved surface to seat over 2,500 people. Stone seatwalls and large canopy trees reinforce the edges of the plaza and create intimate spaces for students to use throughout the year.
Situated between two wetlands, the project required a high level of environmental sensitivity and ecological stewardship. All run-off from the plaza is accommodated through permeable pavers. Native plant material is used along the edges, maintaining the integrity of the ecological systems while offering new habitat for wildlife. Additional design services were provided for O’Hara Village Student Center, Roche Dining Commons and May Pavilion Ice Rink that is installed on the Science Quad every winter.
