Wetlands, a perennial stream, steep slopes, ledge and a limited buildable area presented challenges for the development of the site plan, developed by Brown Sardina, for this new K-5 elementary school in Gloucester, MA. Sustainable strategies were incorporated into the site including bio-retention areas and swales that have been integrated into the design to mitigate and clean storm water and to promote recharge. With the exception of the softball and multi-purpose field, all disturbed areas of the site have been planted with drought tolerant plants and a meadow/wildflower seed mix limiting site maintenance. Mounded planted areas define spaces and screen the playground areas from public view. The playgrounds, vibrant and colorful include a map of the world and a variety of playground games. The project is seeking LEED Gold certification.
